Ceerigaabo – Somaliland has issued new decisions aimed at tightening security in Ceerigaabo city and the wider Sanaag region at a time when the city has witnessed multiple clan conflicts that have caused significant loss of life and property.

A delegation composed of members of Somaliland’s House of Representatives and government officials, who stated they were assigned to restore stability in Ceerigaabo, announced in a press release that only police forces are responsible for ensuring the city’s security. These new directives prohibit civilians or anyone other than the police from carrying weapons within the city.

“The committee instructs the security forces that, starting from February 3, 2025, no one should be seen carrying weapons in Ceerigaabo. Anyone found doing so will face action from the security forces. Additionally, the security forces of Sanaag region are responsible for maintaining stability in the region,” said a member of the committee.

Residents of Ceerigaabo have been urged to cooperate with security agencies to help ensure peace and stability in the region. The Somaliland delegation also called on those displaced from Ceerigaabo to return, emphasizing that the city is now safe and that there is no reason for them to remain away from their homes.

These decisions come at a time when Ceerigaabo has experienced recurring conflicts, leading to widespread displacement. According to the United Nations, the most recent conflict in Ceerigaabo has forced nearly 43,000 people to flee their homes due to escalating violence.

Various stakeholders, including Somaliland, Khaatumo, and Puntland, have expressed differing views on the ongoing conflict in Ceerigaabo, which has persisted since last year.
