MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia has signed into law the comprehensive Somali Labor Law, marking a significant advancement in labor rights within the nation. The law, which was approved by the House of the People on August 7, 2024, and by the Upper House on November 25, 2024, encompasses 35 chapters dedicated to improving working conditions and ensuring equal employment opportunities for all citizens, excluding armed forces personnel, unless they are under civilian contracts.

Key Features of the Law

This groundbreaking legislation guarantees that no person will be discriminated against in employment opportunities based on ethnicity, gender, language, religion, political or other personal beliefs.

“The new law is a cornerstone in ensuring that all Somali workers are treated fairly and with respect, irrespective of their background,” said President Mohamud during the signing ceremony. “It is designed to protect our workers and enhance the overall employment standard of our nation.”
