Djibouti – Doraleh Port has reinforced its crucial role in regional trade after Djibouti officially welcomed 10 new containers aimed at improving cargo handling services.A grand ceremony was held at Doraleh Port to introduce the new equipment, led by the Director-General of STTD, Abdullahi Cadaawe, with the presence of Chinese officials.“This equipment is part of a major project we launched last year. We had previously received four cranes dedicated to ship and maritime cargo handling,” said STTD Director-General Abdullahi Cadaawe. He added that the new equipment would enhance efficiency and streamline container cargo services, reducing the workload at Djibouti’s ports. The equipment was transported by a Chinese-owned vessel named YUAN FU and is part of broader efforts to upgrade Djibouti’s infrastructure and port services. The Director-General of STTD, Abdullahi Cadaawe, also highlighted that last year’s heavy workload in trade operations had impacted Djibouti’s economic growth, prompting them to focus on easing operational burdens. “With this in mind, this year we have placed great emphasis on reducing work burdens while enhancing economic growth,” said the Director-General.Doraleh Port previously announced that container arrivals reached one million in October 2024, marking the first time since its establishment that the port handled one million containers in a span of ten months. Launched in 2009, Doraleh Port has an annual handling capacity of 1.6 million tons, making it one of Djibouti’s primary revenue sources. Strategically located, it serves as a vital link connecting maritime routes between East and West, North and South, elevating Doraleh Port’s role in East African trade and logistics.
