Regional officials, elders, and community members stand in solemn silence during a commemoration event in Jigjiga, Somali Region, to honor victims of past violations.

Fafan, Somali Region — The Somali Regional State (SRS) has officially commemorated the Day of Violations with a high-level forum held in Jigjiga, the capital of the Fafan zone. The event was organized to remember the injustices and human rights abuses that the people of the Somali Region have endured over the years.

The forum brought together senior regional officials, most notably the Head of the President’s Office of the Somali Regional State, Dr. Hussein Hashi Qassim. Other participants included members of the Commission Investigating Human Rights Violations, regional administrators, religious scholars, traditional elders, and distinguished guests.

The discussions during the event centered on the significance of commemorating such a day, revisiting the historical violations inflicted upon the community, examining their profound social and psychological impacts, and strategizing on how to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Speaking at the forum, Dr. Hussein Hashi Qassim stressed the importance of recognition and accountability in the healing process. He stated that the region cannot move forward unless the past is acknowledged and those who suffered are remembered.

The suffering endured by our people was extremely severe. Everyone was abandoned, and acts that one would never expect to be done to a human being were committed—especially targeting the most vulnerable in society,” said Dr. Hussein.

Throughout the gathering, officials consistently echoed the need for justice, inclusive reconciliation, and the creation of institutional safeguards that promote peace, protect human dignity, and ensure the prevention of future violations. The commemoration concluded with a collective call for sustainable peace and justice for the people of the Somali Region, underlining the critical role of remembrance in shaping a more secure and equitable future
