The Somali government announced today that it has taken full control of Ruun-Nirgood District in the Middle Shabelle region. The takeover followed a coordinated operation carried out by government forces and allied local militia (Macawiisley), targeting Al-Shabaab positions in the area.

Ruun-Nirgood District Commissioner Muxudiin Kulmiye, speaking to state media, said the operation was well-planned and successful in driving Al-Shabaab militants out of the area.

“Ruun-Nirgood witnessed a carefully planned operation this morning, carried out by local and government forces. The hideouts of the terrorists (Al-Shabaab) were attacked, and they were expelled from the district,” the commissioner said.

He also noted that the forces destroyed several bases and facilities previously used by the group, which had reportedly been harassing civilians and local businesses.

However, the commissioner did not disclose the number of casualties on either side. The recapture of Ruun-Nirgood comes amid intensified operations by the Somali government against Al-Shabaab militants in the Middle Shabelle region.
