Mogadishu, April 16, 2025 – Al-Shabaab has taken full control of Adan Yabaal, a town located in the Middle Shabelle region, after launching a major assault on Somali National Army bases.According to a security official who requested anonymity due to media restrictions, Al-Shabaab fighters launched early morning attacks on military posts in and around the town, resulting in the army withdrawing after intense clashes.“A heavy battle broke out following several simultaneous attacks. Eventually, the troops withdrew from the town,” said the official. Both sides are believed to have suffered casualties, although the exact number of fatalities has not yet been confirmed.Adan Yabaal is located approximately 245 kilometers from the capital, Mogadishu, and holds military and strategic logistical importance, as it links the Hirshabelle and Galmudug federal member states. The town was previously liberated from Al-Shabaab in 2022, during a military operation conducted by Somali forces with support from local militias. The recapture of Adan Yabaal by Al-Shabaab has raised serious concerns, highlighting the growing challenges facing the Somali government in its ongoing war against the group, and the militants’ continuing ability to carry out coordinated attacks in central and southern Somalia.
