MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — The Government of Somalia, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has officially launched the “Future of Pastoralism” project—an ambitious initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience and sustainability of pastoralist communities across the country.

The project seeks to address the pressing challenges of climate change, recurring droughts, and land degradation by establishing Pastoral Development Hubs (PDHs)—integrated centers that will provide essential services such as veterinary care, livestock markets, and access to crucial pastoral resources.

Strategic Shift Toward Long-Term Development

Describing the initiative as a “historic step,” Somalia’s Minister of Livestock, Forestry, and Range, Hassan Hussein Mohamed, said: “The Future of Pastoralism project is a significant milestone, and we are developing a national strategy based on sustainable services that will directly benefit rural communities.”

Deputy Prime Minister Abdulsalam Abdulle Ali echoed this sentiment, noting that the project signifies a move away from short-term emergency interventions toward long-term, community-driven development. By strengthening pastoralism, we are preparing our people to withstand future droughts and build a more resilient rural economy,” he stated.

Part of a National Vision

The initiative is a central pillar of Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (2025–2029), reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable development and economic recovery, particularly in rural and agro-pastoral areas.

FAO and Somali officials emphasized that the success of the project will depend on strong local partnerships and continued international support to ensure inclusive growth and long-term food security.
