The Chairman of the Somali Electoral Commission speaks at an event in Mogadishu about the extension of the political party registration period.

Mogadishu, Somalia –The National Election Commission announced yesterday that it has extended the registration period for political parties in the country after the previous deadline had passed.

A statement issued by the Independent National Election Commission and Boundaries, dated April 20, informed political parties and all other election stakeholders that the registration period for political parties has been extended by an additional nine (9) days.

“The Independent National Election Commission & Boundaries informs political parties and all other election stakeholders that the registration period for political parties has been extended by nine (9) days,” the statement read.

The commission noted that the nine-day extension will begin on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, and end on April 30, 2025.

This decision, according to the commission, came after reviewing requests from parties that submitted their applications and were in the process of completing the required documentation and conditions with the General Registrar’s Office of the Commission.

This extension marks the second time the commission has extended the registration period since the political party registration process began.

The commission also stated on April 19 that, to date, 17 political parties have been registered and granted the official party certification.

The political party registration process by the Independent National Election Commission started on January 20, marking a 100-day period, which could be further extended.
