Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud shaking hands with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa, receiving an invitation for the upcoming Arab-Russia Summit.

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed Mikhail L. Bogdanov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East and Africa, to Villa Somalia today. The meeting focused on enhancing political, economic, and security cooperation between Somalia and Russia.

During the discussions, Bogdanov conveyed a formal invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, inviting President Hassan Sheikh to participate in the upcoming Russia-Arab Cooperation Forum, scheduled to be held in Moscow in May 2025.

“This invitation marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Somalia and Russia. We look forward to using this summit as a platform to deepen cooperation,” read a statement issued by Villa Somalia.

Expanding Cooperation

The talks highlighted the growing momentum in Somalia-Russia relations, with both sides expressing commitment to exploring new opportunities for collaboration and reinforcing existing partnerships. The meeting is seen as part of broader diplomatic efforts to expand Somalia’s international alliances and economic prospects.

President Hassan Sheikh’s potential participation in the Moscow summit signals Somalia’s openness to fostering stronger ties with global powers as it navigates complex security and development challenges.
