Algiers, Algeria – Djibouti has marked a significant milestone in its athletic history after securing six medals — three golds, one silver, and two bronzes — at the 24th Arab Athletics Championships held in Algiers since April 30. The closing ceremony of the event is scheduled for today.

According to the Djibouti News Agency (ADI), Djibouti’s medal haul includes:

  • Kadra Mohamed Dembil – gold medal in the women’s 5000m,
  • Haboon Ahmed Jama – silver medal in the same race,
  • Hani Idris Hirsi – gold in the men’s 10,000m,
  • Abdulfattah Dahir Awwale – bronze in the men’s 10,000m,
  • Aadan Waberi Darar – gold in the half marathon,
  • Hassan Weys Raayale – bronze in the half marathon.

“The results speak for themselves,” said ADI’s statement, emphasizing that Djibouti is now officially etched into the history of athletics for both men and women.

In addition, Djibouti athletes earned impressive wins in international competitions held in Tokyo, Japan:

  • Mohamed Ismail Ibrahim (Fatax) – silver in the 5000m race,
  • Samiya Hassan Nur, hailed as Djibouti’s top female athletics prospect, won silver in the 10,000m at the ASCIC tournament and is nearing qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September,
  • Ibrahim Hassan Buux has already qualified for the global event after winning gold in the marathon.
