DJIBOUTI CITY – 2025 — Djibouti’s Prime Minister, Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, yesterday received Jean Todt, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, accompanied by Jose Barahona, the UN Resident Coordinator in Djibouti.The visit focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in road safety and public transport regulation, aligned with UN development standards.Discussions centered on implementing Presidential Decree No. 2024-313/PR/MI, which established the Central Committee for Road Safety Coordination chaired by the government. This committee will coordinate relevant ministries including Infrastructure, Transport, Interior, and Urban Administration, working alongside the Djibouti Roads Authority and security forces.Jean Todt emphasized the importance of joint efforts to save lives on the roads, stating:“It is vital to implement measures collectively to protect road users’ lives. We stand ready to support Djibouti in achieving sustainable road safety.”He also called for urgent actions such as mandatory helmet use for motorcyclists, speed control, technical vehicle inspections, and improved road lighting to reduce accidents and casualties.The meeting concluded with mutual agreements and commitments to promote road safety culture as a means to protect lives and foster national development.According to UN data, road accidents claim more than 1.2 million lives globally each year, with 50 million more people suffering injuries or disabilities.
