The Cabinet Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia announced on Thursday that their salaries for this month will be used to support the frontline forces in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

During their weekly meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, the cabinet reached this decision amid the government’s intensified operations against the militant group, requiring joint efforts.

The federal government spokesperson, Farhan Mohamed, highlighted the importance of this move at a time when Somalia is committed to taking full control of its security and stability.

“During the weekly meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, the ministers made a historic agreement to donate their salaries for this month in support of the anti-Al-Shabaab operations,” said Mr. Jimale, the government spokesperson.

“This move will motivate the Somali armed forces who are at the forefront of the fight against Al-Shabaab, as well as the local community forces, moving forward from the leaders’ appeal to jointly combat terrorism”, he added.

This decision comes after the cabinet ministers analysed the reports on the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab presented by the Ministry of Defence, which contained recent achievements against the terrorist group.

The war between the Somali Government and the Al-Shabaab group has intensified since the re-election of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in May 2022. Since then, government forces, together with the local community and international partners, have liberated more than 120 locations from the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
