Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Cabinet Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia passed the National Meteorological Agency bill at their weekly Ministerial meeting on Thursday.

This important bill aims to provide timely and efficient meteorological data on climate changes and weather-related threats.

The ministers stated that establishing a National Meteorological Agency will safeguard the citizens’ wellbeing and promote sustainable environmental benefits.

They cabinet ministers emphasized that this bill meets the rigorous standards articulated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoum underscored the importance of this bill to providing a timely precautionary steps, especially during this highly anticipated rainy season.

“Gratitude to the Cabinet for their approval of the historic bill, paving the way for the establishment of the National Meteorological Agency. This significant stride is dedicated to ensuring the provision of timely early warning data for climate and weather-related threats, in strict alignment with the rigorous standards articulated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),” said on Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoum on her official X.

She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to work with and supervise the operations of this agency for effective and efficient meteorological services.

“Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will diligently nurture and supervise this endeavor, assuring the establishment of an autonomous and resilient agency,” she added.

Somalia is currently facing the impacts of climate change, such as floods in areas surrounding the Shabelle and Juba rivers. The lack of meteorological agencies to provide warnings and precautions to the Somali people has been identified as a major factor in these challenges.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has expressed deep concerns in recent weeks about the impending crisis and the imminent danger posed by potential floods during this rainy season.

The Ministry has urged all citizens, particularly those residing in riverine regions, to exercise the utmost vigilance and adopt extraordinary measures to protect themselves and their communities during this rainy season.
