Nairobi(Mogadishu24)-The Government of Kenya has revealed that over 2.5 million animals died due to threats posed by climate change, including persistent droughts that have ravaged the country for more than three years.

Kenyan authorities on environment and climate change said that the African continent will lose about 15 percent of its economy due to climate changes, equivalent to an economic loss of more than $1.5 billion.

The authorities further pointed out that droughts, floods, conflicts between wildlife, and reduced agricultural production are the results of climate change that have affected the country.

On November 13, the Government of Kenya launched a nationwide tree-planting exercise to combat the effects of climate change, with the goal of planting over 10 million trees across the country within this year.

In a statement declaring November 13 as an annual public holiday to plant more trees, the government said that it is “part of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme – Towards the growing of fifteen (15) billion trees” within the next ten years.

Kenya has experienced the impacts of climate change, with droughts and floods affecting various regions, particularly Northeastern, Eastern, Rift Valley, and Western regions. These climatic challenges have had huge implications, especially for pastoralist communities.

In September, the Government of Kenya launched electric motorbikes in an effort to enhance Kenya’s climate change action by adopting low-carbon and efficient transportation systems.
