Jigjiga(Mogadishu24)-The office of Disaster Risk Management in Ethiopia’s Somali Region opened a conference in Jigjiga, the administrative capital of the Regional Administration, on Wednesday, to analyse the effects of torrential rains and riverine flooding in the region.

The meeting saw attendance from officials of the Disaster Risk Management Office, international organizations, federal and state ministries, and other high-ranking government officials.

Mr. Bashir Hussein, the State Minister of Disaster Risk Management, explained that they are conducting a study on the impacts of the rains on agriculture, health, education, and the livelihoods of the people.

The report from this study will be utilized by the government to develop a comprehensive plan and find solutions to reduce the impacts of such devastating climate change on the communities in the region.

The minister further stated that they will deploy highly skilled teams to analyse the impacts and prepare Zone Level reports, covering each zone they visit.

According to regional authorities, the torrential rains have significantly impacted the region, killing over 30 people and displacing more than 50,000 others.
