Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The United States and Somalia have embarked on a landmark security collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of up to five military bases for the Somalia National Army’s (SNA) elite Danab Brigade. This ambitious project, valued at over $100 million, marks a significant step in strengthening Somalia’s defense capabilities against threats such as al-Shabaab, which the U.S. recognizes as a terrorist organization. The MoU signing ceremony was presided over by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee, highlighting the strong partnership between the two nations in the realm of security. The new bases are slated for construction in strategic locations across Somalia, including Mogadishu, Jowhar, Baidoa, Kismayo, and Dhusamareb. These sites were chosen to enhance the operational reach and effectiveness of the Danab Brigade across key regions.Assistant Secretary Phee emphasized the significance of the U.S. support to the Danab Brigade, stating it as “a centerpiece of our ongoing security cooperation with Somalia.” She further added that the construction of these bases underscores the U.S.’s recognition of the joint efforts’ success in building a capable, professional, and accountable force within the SNA.Since an agreement in 2017 between the United States and Somalia to recruit, train, equip, and mentor 3,000 men and women from across Somalia, the Danab Brigade has evolved into a formidable force. It has played a crucial role as a quick reaction strike force in battle, maintaining a clan-neutral character, and demonstrating its capacity to engage and counter al-Shabaab’s insurgency efforts effectively. This new development is expected to further enhance the brigade’s capabilities and contribute significantly to Somalia’s ongoing efforts to ensure national security and stability. An historic day!
