Garowe(Mogadishu24)-During his visit to Garowe, Acting UN Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, reaffirmed the UN’s support for Puntland’s development and humanitarian efforts. He expressed gratitude to President Said Abdullahi Deni and his administration for their warm welcome and discussed the region’s development priorities and humanitarian needs.

“Our visit underscores the unwavering commitment of the combined UN system in Somalia to support the government and people of Puntland,” Swan stated. He highlighted the alignment of UN efforts with the Puntland Development Plan and the Somali National Development Plan, noting extensive support for food security, health needs, and internally displaced persons.

Swan praised Puntland’s efforts in addressing security issues, including containing terrorist groups in the Bari region and managing clan conflicts in Mudug. “The renewed incidents of piracy and the impact of continued migration flows also require attention,” he added.

He commended preparations for the upcoming direct local elections in Nugal region, set for July 23, emphasizing their role in reinforcing democratization and increasing the participation of women and youth.

Swan also addressed broader national issues, urging Somalia’s senior leaders to overcome differences and work together. “It would be to the benefit of the Somali people if the country’s senior leaders could find a way to work together, to agree on solutions to these national challenges, and then to take action in unity,” he emphasized.

In conclusion, Swan reiterated the UN’s commitment to collaborating closely with President Deni and his government to support the advancement of Puntland and all of Somalia.
