Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Breakaway Republic of Somaliland has on Tuesday reaffirmed the importance of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ethiopia, emphasizing the mutual benefits and cooperative efforts between the two neighboring nations. This MoU underlines the strong bilateral relations based on mutual respect and collaboration.

Since declaring its independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has pursued a path of stability, democracy, and self-governance. As a sovereign state, Somaliland remains dedicated to fostering robust ties with its neighbors, including Ethiopia, which is regarded as a strategic ally.

“Contrasting this commitment, the Mogadishu administration, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, has been accused of attempts to destabilize Somaliland by supporting local militia groups. Reports suggest that weaponry from Mogadishu has ended up in the hands of Al-Shabaab and clan militias, further exacerbating regional instability”, Somaliland said in a statement.

In stark contrast to the situation in Mogadishu, President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland was elected through a process of free and fair elections, reflecting the country’s adherence to democratic principles.

“This stands in opposition to the government in Mogadishu, which was formed through a non-democratic selection process involving a limited number of individuals”, said the statement

Somaliland asserts its sovereign right to engage in relations and agreements with other nations. Given its strategic location, Somaliland is a key player in the geopolitics of the Red Sea region and beyond.

The statement added that the Federal Government of Somalia is lacking control and credibility, is not considered a part of this strategic equation. Somaliland urges the Mogadishu administration to focus on stabilizing its own affairs before interfering in Somaliland’s internal matters.
