Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-At the conclusion of the Somali Scholars Conference, which ran from July 29 to August 1, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the critical importance of unity among Somalia’s religious scholars, asserting that the nation’s unity depends on their cohesion. The president welcomed the scholars’ statement and urged them to further strengthen their unity to ensure Somalia’s lasting unity.

Key Points from President Hassan’s Address

President Hassan thanked the scholars for their support in protecting religion, culture, and the lives of Somali citizens. He urged them to enhance their roles in guiding the people, supporting the government, fostering national development, and raising societal awareness. “The Somali scholars are the leaders of the people, and we are waiting for you to direct the people to the path of peace, security, and governance,” he said.

He further stressed, “Peace, unity, and development that Somali people achieve is connected to finding Somali scholars who are one.” The president also emphasized the importance of combating Al-Shabaab, preventing the group’s misinterpretations, and promoting harmony among Somali communities affected by civil wars.

Conference Highlights and Challenges

This second annual conference, held in Mogadishu, aimed to focus on national unity but faced challenges. Notably, it experienced boycotts from religious sects, particularly the Sufi, and the absence of participation from some Federal Member States like Southwest, Galmudug, and Puntland.

Call for Religious Unity

In his opening remarks, President Hassan highlighted the importance of unity in religion, saying, “In politics, it is likely divided and needed for consensus, but it is not possible in religion.” He commended the efforts of religious scholars in promoting Islamic teachings both within Somalia and abroad.

Despite the conference’s challenges, the president’s call to action aimed to foster a more unified religious front, which he believes is essential for Somalia’s peace, security, and development. The unity among religious scholars is seen as a cornerstone for the nation’s overall unity and progress.
