Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somali security forces have intensified security measures around the presidential palace, Villa Somalia, following warnings of a possible terrorist attack. Overnight, forces including presidential guards conducted home-to-home searches in residential areas within Villa Somalia and closed off main roads leading to the State House, according to residents and officials. The heightened security comes after UN agencies based in the Halane compound, the green zone, issued warnings of potential Al-Shabaab attacks on August 1. This alert was tragically realized when Al-Shabaab carried out a deadly attack on Beach View Hotel at Liido Beach in Mogadishu’s Abdiaziz district, killing 40 people and injuring 247 others. While police and security forces have not commented on the current security operations, the actions reflect a proactive approach to ensuring safety in the face of credible threats. The increased security measures come just hours after members of the Somali Parliament criticized the government for failing to ensure adequate security. The security lockdown has significantly impacted movement and caused blockages in the area, as authorities work to prevent any further terrorist activities. Residents and officials reported the heightened presence of security personnel and restricted access to the vicinity of Villa Somalia. The government’s swift response aimed to prevent further tragedies and bolster the confidence of residents in the security measures being implemented. The situation remains tense as authorities continue to monitor and respond to potential threats.
