Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Prominent Somali leaders, including former presidents, members of Parliament, and the former governor of Benadir region, have condemned the government’s actions against protesters in Mogadishu over the past two days.

The protests, led by tuk-tuk drivers, youth, and women, were sparked by frustrations over increased taxes, fines, and over $300 in license fees imposed by the Somali Government.

Leaders Speak Out Against Police Actions

Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo criticized the government’s response, stating that the Somali youth, especially tuk-tuk drivers who work under difficult conditions, deserve support rather than harsh penalties.

“Menacing and injuring them while they hold peaceful demonstrations to voice their concerns is unacceptable,” Farmajo said in a statement.

He emphasized that these actions are a disappointment to the youth who are committed to rebuilding their country.

Calls for Respecting Constitutional Rights

Himilo Qaran Party, led by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, also condemned the crackdown, reminding the government that the constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and protest. The party urged the government to safeguard these constitutional rights and address the grievances of the protesters, particularly regarding the high taxes that are causing hardship for many citizens.

Parliamentary Criticism

Federal Parliament Member Abdirahman Abdishakur labeled the taxes imposed by the government as illegal, arguing that they were implemented without parliamentary approval. He called on the parliament to defend the rights of the people against what he described as oppressive measures.

Protests and Government Response

The protests in Mogadishu, particularly at the KM-4 junction, have seen police use excessive force to disperse demonstrators, including live fire and the use of police vehicles to drive over protesters. Despite a ban on such rallies by Mogadishu municipality authorities, the protests continued for a second consecutive day.

Deputy Governor of Benadir region, Mohamed Ahmed Yaboh, warned that the protests were a mistake and stated that those involved would be held accountable.

The situation in Mogadishu remains tense as citizens and leaders alike continue to call for the government to listen to the concerns of the protesters and seek a peaceful resolution.
