Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following renewed clashes between Southwest State forces and clan militias in Yaaqbaraweyne, near Wanlaweyn district in the Lower Shabelle region.“The renewed conflict in Yaaqbariweyne, Wanlaweyn district, Lower Shabelle, is alarming. We call on all sides to stop fighting immediately and unconditionally to allow room for dialogue and peaceful resolution,” Ahmed stated. He urged religious leaders, elders, intellectuals, and youth to intervene to prevent further violence and end rhetoric that exacerbates tensions. The Southwest State government reported that its forces launched an operation on Thursday to clear illegal checkpoints along the main road between Yaaqbaraweyne in the Lower Shabelle region and Burhakaba in the Bay region. However, the operation has led to clashes with local clan militias.Federal Parliament member Dahir Amin Jesow condemned the operation, describing it as a “misfortunate attack” on local forces who are already engaged in fighting Al-Shabaab militants.“The local forces liberated key routes between the Shabelle regions. It is unfortunate that while liberating terrorists, Southwest State forces attack locals instead of pushing back Al-Shabaab near Baidoa,” Jesow said. The situation remains tense as calls for peace and dialogue continue in hopes of preventing further escalation.
