Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia’s Acting Ambassador to Sudan, Ahmed Abdi Hassan, has revealed the release of 30 Somali young men and women who had been imprisoned in Port-Sudan for the past five months. The group, consisting of 27 men and 7 women, was returned to Somalia on Tuesday.

The individuals were reportedly arrested while attempting to continue their migration journey according to Somali News Agency. Ambassador Hassan also revealed that efforts are underway to locate 11 other teenagers who were abducted approximately 1,000 kilometers from Port-Sudan. “The youth were on a bus at the time of the incident,” he noted.

The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) for its role in rescuing the Somali nationals trapped in Sudan, which is currently embroiled in a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The IOM has not yet commented on the situation.

The conflict in Sudan, which began on April 15, 2023, during Ramadan, has created a dangerous environment for many, including migrants caught in the crossfire between the warring factions.
