Erigavo, Sanaag(Mogadishu24)-The breakaway Republic of Somaliland has on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the recent outbreak of violence in and around the town of Goof in the southeastern Sanaag region. The clashes, reportedly instigated by militia groups, are seen as an attempt to disrupt Somaliland’s upcoming elections in November and undermine the peace that has been maintained for decades.Somaliland’s government accused former Puntland Vice President Ahmed Karaash of leading the hostilities, with the support of external militia forces according to a statement issued by Somaliland Ministry of foreign issues. The government reported that eight people, including five nomadic herders, were killed in the violence, with three militia members also killed in retaliatory actions. Somaliland condemned these aggressions and called on the international community to take immediate notice of the threat to regional stability. The SSC-Khaatumo administration, however, accused Somaliland forces of targeting civilians, including the killing of a businessman and protesters in Erigavo. They urged the Federal Government of Somalia and the international community to intervene and prevent further violence. The situation remains tense, with both sides urging for international attention to prevent further escalation and protect civilians.
