Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Somalia Tourism Expo 2024 was held in Mogadishu on Saturday, September 14, organized by the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism.

The event aimed to boost Somalia’s tourism industry by highlighting the country’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and commitment to peace and reconciliation.

“We recognize that our efforts in tourism go hand in hand with building a positive image of Somalia. By showcasing our stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, we can reshape perceptions and invite the world to discover the beauty that is Somalia,” said Information Minister Daud Aweys Jama during the event.

Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama echoed these sentiments, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “It was an honor to close the Somali Tourism Expo 2024 in Mogadishu today… Our rich culture, heritage, and unique natural treasures are a blessing that can greatly boost tourism and drive economic growth.”

The event drew attendees from various sectors, including representatives from the African Union, Turkey, international airlines, and other dignitaries. While Mogadishu’s domestic tourist attractions such as Liido Beach, Peace Garden, and Mogadishu Tourist Village continue to attract residents, but the security situation remains a significant challenge.

Al-Shabaab, a militant group, has frequently targeted these popular sites. In August, the group claimed responsibility for twin bombings at Beach View Hotel on Liido Beach, killing over 50 people and injuring 247. Just yesterday, Al-Shabaab claimed another attack, killing at least eight people and injuring 16 in a roadside bombing near Kahda district.

Despite these security challenges, Somalia’s leadership remains determined to promote tourism as a means of economic growth and national pride. The event comes two before the World Tourism Day, that will be September 27.
