Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia is on Monday commemorating the tragic 14 October 2017 truck bombing at Mogadishu’s Zobe Junction, which claimed 587 lives and injured around 1,000 others.

The devastating attack, one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in the world after 9/11, left behind mass casualties, widespread destruction of properties, and significant damage to nearby residential and business areas.

Although no group officially claimed responsibility, the Somali government accused Al-Shabaab of orchestrating the attack.

Seven years later, survivors and victims’ families continue to remember the catastrophe. While life and businesses have returned to the area, the memory of the disaster remains vivid. On social media, the public is sharing photos of the bombing scene and tributes to those who lost their lives, expressing sorrow and ensuring the tragedy remains unforgettable.

Despite ongoing government offensives against the militant group, Al-Shabaab continues to pose a significant security threat, carrying out attacks in Mogadishu and controlling large areas of the country.

The Somali government, with support from local forces, launched a renewed military campaign in 2022 following the re-election of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. However, no official memorial event was organized by the federal government today, according to Mogadishu 24.
