Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport has officially banned the import of single-use plastic bags into Somalia’s ports, in a move aimed at curbing environmental pollution.

The directive, primarily addressed to Mogadishu seaport authorities and law enforcement officials, empowers police and security forces to enforce the ban and arrest violators.

This action follows an earlier warning by the Ministry of Environment and Climate against the use of plastic, citing its detrimental impact on the environment. However, concerns have arisen over the lack of affordable and available alternatives to plastic bags, leaving both consumers and businesses in a difficult position.

Somalia, ranked among the world’s poorest countries according to the latest World Bank report, faces significant challenges in providing cost-effective alternatives, raising questions about the implementation of the ban.

While the government is committed to reducing plastic waste, finding sustainable, affordable solutions remains a pressing issue for the nation.
