Addis Ababa(Mogadishu24)-A massive fire erupted in the Merkato Shema area of Addis Ababa on Monday, causing widespread alarm among local residents and businesses. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire, which broke out earlier in the day, has been challenging to control despite ongoing firefighting efforts.

“The fire is intense and has yet to be contained. People are fleeing, trying to save their belongings,” said witnesses at the scene. They noted that significant property has already been damaged, and emergency responders have called for additional resources to manage the situation. Firefighters emphasized that “water alone is not enough” to extinguish the blaze, highlighting the severity of the incident.

As a precaution, residents not directly affected by the flames have begun evacuating their properties, adding to the sense of urgency in the area.

Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebe addressed the situation on her official social media channels, expressing deep regret over the property losses.

She acknowledged that efforts to control the fire have been complicated by narrow roads, which have hindered the movement of fire trucks. In response, a helicopter has been deployed to assist ground teams.

“I urge all those involved in the emergency response to redouble their efforts to mitigate the damage,” the mayor said, calling for continued cooperation between fire and rescue teams, local authorities, and the community.
