Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) officially launched operations today, marking a new phase in the UN’s support for Somalia as it replaces the former United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

This transitional mission, set for two years, aims to enhance Somalia’s national ownership and self-reliance while strengthening its institutions.

“UNTMIS reaffirms the UN’s commitment to the Government and people of Somalia in building a stronger country and better future,” said James Swan, the UN Secretary-General’s Acting Special Representative for Somalia. “We look forward to working together as partners throughout this planned two-year mission.”

UNTMIS was established through UN Security Council Resolution 2753 (2024), adopted on October 30.

The mission will focus on key priority areas aligned with Somalia’s needs, implementing a phased transfer of responsibilities to Somali institutions, the United Nations Country Team, and other stakeholders.

This approach underscores the UN’s dedication to supporting Somalia’s long-term stability and sustainable development.
