Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia’s bicameral parliament, led by Speaker Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur and Senate Speaker, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, appointed a 15-member interim committee on Thursday to draft rules and regulations for establishing political associations and parties. This committee will also work on the laws governing the formation of an election commission and setting electoral boundaries.Following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s request, the parliament postponed its constitutional leave for one month to complete key election-related legislation, including critical constitutional chapters five through nine. The committee’s establishment follows the recent National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in Mogadishu, which concluded without consensus due to the absence of Puntland and Jubaland representatives. Both states have voiced strong opposition to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), with Puntland officially withdrawing confidence in FGS and Jubaland echoing similar discontent.Political tensions have escalated further with the resignations of two deputy ministers and a state minister from these regions, citing dissatisfaction with FGS policies.Jubaland has since announced its plan to proceed with its elections later this month, rejecting the FGS’s proposal for a one-year election term extension, which had been agreed upon by the federal government and three other federal member states. The new committee is seen as a step toward addressing these election issues, yet the absence of consensus among Somalia’s key political entities underscores the challenges ahead.
