Hargeisa(Mogadishu24)-The breakaway republic of Somaliland is set to hold its presidential and party elections tomorrow, November 13, with over one million citizens expected to cast their votes at 2,637 polling stations nationwide.

Security has been heightened, with a strong presence of security forces and police across the region to ensure a safe and peaceful election process. The Somaliland National Electoral Commission emphasized its commitment to a “safe and historic election day.”

Three main candidates are vying for the presidency: Eng. Feysal Ali Warabe of the UCID party, Abdirahman Irro from the Wadani Party, and incumbent President Muse Bihi of the ruling Kulmiye party.

These elections underscore Somaliland’s longstanding commitment to self-governance, managing its electoral processes and security independently for over 30 years as it seeks international recognition, despite the absence of formal acknowledgment.

International observers, including a team from The Brenthurst Foundation, along with European Union representatives and other international supporters, are currently stationed in Hargeisa, Somaliland’s administrative capital.

Their presence aims to reinforce transparency in the elections.

The Federal Government of Somalia has also expressed support for a peaceful and democratic election in the northern regions, urging a fair and free process.

This election takes place amid regional tensions, particularly following a port agreement with Ethiopia signed earlier this year, which has heightened complexities of relations between Somalia and Ethiopia.
