Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia’s Parliament unanimously approved the law of establishing the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission, with all 173 members voting in favor. This milestone marks a critical step toward ensuring transparent and credible elections in Somalia.

“This unanimous vote shows your commitment to free and fair elections. On behalf of the Ministry of Interior, I thank you for your hard work and dedication to Somalia’s democratic ambitions,” said Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation.

The bicameral parliament had earlier appointed a 15-member interim electoral and boundaries committee, along with its leadership, to lay the groundwork for Somalia’s electoral processes.

These advancements come amidst opposition from Puntland and Jubaland States, which have rejected the Federal Government’s approach to implementing a one-person, one-vote system. Mediation efforts, including a recent visit by a Kenyan delegation, are ongoing to resolve differences between the Federal Government and Jubaland state.

The establishment of the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission is seen as a significant step in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions and electoral transparency.
