Hargeisa(Mogadishu24)-Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission announced on Tuesday that Waddani Party leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) secured a decisive victory in the November 17 presidential election, winning 63.92% of the votes.

Incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi of the Kulmiye Party garnered 34.81%, while UCID Party earned just 0.74%, losing its party status to the Kaah Association.

Mohamed Ali Abdi, also from the Waddani Party, was elected as Somaliland’s Deputy President. Over 1.2 million voters participated in the election to choose the president and deputy for a five-year term.

Abdirahman Irro, a former Speaker of Somaliland’s Parliament and veteran Somali diplomat, is recognized for his democratic principles and commitment to reform. His campaign focused on six pillars: national security, good governance, social services, judiciary reform, economic development, and youth and women’s empowerment.

The Somali Federal Government commended the election and congratulated Irro on his victory. Leaders across Somalia, including former presidents and prime ministers, extended their congratulations.

Outgoing President Muse Bihi Abdi’s tenure included controversial moves, such as a port deal with Ethiopia for recognition, which strained relations with Somalia and remains unresolved.

It remains unclear whether Irro will continue with this policy or adopt a different approach.

Irro’s victory marks a significant political shift in Somaliland, with many hoping for renewed focus on economic reforms, stability, and democratic governance.
