Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with a ceremony in the capital Mogadishu, organized by the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development. The event, attended by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, members of the cabinet, and other stakeholders, highlighted the significance of inclusivity and leadership for persons with disabilities. This year’s IDPD theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” underscored the vital role of persons with disabilities in fostering a more equitable world. It emphasizes their inclusion in decision-making processes and aligns with global initiatives, such as the Pact for the Future and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development, aimed at advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre commended the resilience and contributions of persons with disabilities in Somalia, while calling for strengthened efforts to eliminate barriers they face, including stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to education and employment opportunities.Despite progress, Somalia’s disability advocacy groups highlight the ongoing challenges faced by persons with disabilities, particularly in accessing basic services and employment. The Somali parliament’s ratification of the bill for persons with disabilities marks a step forward, but advocates stress the need for robust implementation to improve living conditions for this marginalized group.Globally, persons with disabilities represent 16% of the population, yet they remain underrepresented in leadership roles across sectors, including health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized that empowering persons with disabilities is critical to achieving health equity and global health goals. The Somali government reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive society and called on all stakeholders to actively support initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for persons with disabilities. https://twitter.com/UNTMIS_/status/1863122966243844561 Post navigationHigh-Level Chinese Delegation Visits Djibouti to Strengthen Bilateral Relations U.S. Ambassador Applauds Somaliland’s Peaceful Power Transition in Meetings with Leaders
