ANKARA – Somalia’s Minister of Justice and Constitution, Hassan Moalim Mohamud, has hailed Türkiye’s critical role in mediating peace between Somalia and Ethiopia, describing the Ankara Declaration as a “new beginning” for development and prosperity in the region.In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency, Mohamud emphasized that the landmark agreement marks a turning point for the two neighboring nations, fostering hope for strengthened ties focused on economic growth and shared prosperity.“The two countries, with a deep-rooted history, now have an opportunity to prioritize development and the well-being of their people,” he said.Reflecting on Türkiye’s longstanding support for Somalia, Mohamud highlighted the transformative journey that began with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s historic visit over a decade ago. Erdogan’s visit, at a time of famine and crisis, laid the foundation for comprehensive cooperation between the two nations across sectors such as development, defense, and now justice.“Türkiye’s influence is evident in every aspect of Somali life — from homes and streets to education and products. Our societies have become almost identical, with many Somalis speaking Turkish and receiving education in Türkiye,” Mohamud noted, calling the relationship “significant and remarkable.”Regarding Türkiye’s mediation in resolving the Somaliland crisis between Somalia and Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa, Mohamud praised Türkiye’s diplomatic success in fostering dialogue and settling disputes that emerged from recent agreements.“Türkiye has been instrumental in bringing Somalia and Ethiopia together and paving the way for a peaceful resolution,” he said.During a meeting with Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, Mohamud underscored the importance of judicial agreements signed between the two nations — the Agreement on Judicial Assistance in Criminal Matters and the Agreement on the Transfer of Prisoners.“These agreements open a new chapter of judicial collaboration.
