Cairo, Egypt(Mogadishu24)-Dr. Badr Abdel-Atty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, confirmed that the African Union Peace and Security Council has welcomed Egypt’s participation in the upcoming peacekeeping mission in Somalia, which will replace the current mission.Speaking in an interview on “Cairo News” with journalist Ahmed Al-Taheri, Abdel-Atty emphasized Egypt’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Somalia.“The trilateral statement was clear in welcoming Egypt’s involvement in this African Union mission, as was the bilateral statement from the meeting between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, which addressed and refuted claims suggesting that there was no invitation or approval from the legitimate Somali government,” said Abdel-Atty.He highlighted that the final statement confirmed the Somali government’s desire for Egyptian presence and contributions from the Egyptian Armed Forces to the peacekeeping efforts.“Any Egyptian participation will be within the framework of this mission, which is welcomed by both the Somali government and the African Union,” he added.Abdel-Atty noted that before the new mission can begin its operations, it must have a clear mandate approved by the UN Security Council, stressing that the process will be carried out in line with international law and legitimacy.
