The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that it carried out airstrikes against the ISIS group on March 25.

According to the command, the strikes took place in the Golis Mountains, a mountainous region in northern Somalia that has long served as a stronghold for ISIS.

A statement released by AFRICOM indicated that preliminary assessments suggest several members of ISIS-Somalia were killed in the operation, with no civilian casualties reported.

“ISIS-Somalia has demonstrated both the intent and capability to attack U.S. forces and their partners,” the AFRICOM statement read, adding that “this group continues to pose an ongoing threat to U.S. security and interests.”

This operation appears to be part of a series of recent airstrikes targeting ISIS members in Somalia.

AFRICOM did not disclose specific details regarding Tuesday’s strikes, citing operational security and the confidentiality of intelligence information.
