By Asha ElmiNairobi, Kenya – General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), announced that the United States has intensified its efforts to combat jihadist groups in East Africa, with support from the Federal Government of Somalia.Langley made these remarks on May 30, 2025, Digital Press Briefing on the African Chiefs of Defense Conference 2025 with the Commander of U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Marine Corps General Michael Langley.He confirmed that AFRICOM has conducted over 25 airstrikes this year, which is double the number of airstrikes carried out last year, as part of efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab and ISIS in Somalia.“At the request of the Government of Somalia, this year, AFRICOM has carried out over 25 airstrikes – double the number we executed last year,” said General Langley.He emphasized that civilian protection remains AFRICOM’s top priority, noting that AFRICOM adheres to the highest standards of civilian protection in the region.Langley also addressed concerns regarding the financial needs of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), acknowledging the existing challenges but reiterating the U.S. commitment to strengthening Somali security forces and ensuring long-term stability in the region.In response to questions about the capabilities of ISIS in Somalia and Al-Shabaab, General Langley stated that U.S. airstrikes have significantly weakened the leadership and operational capacity of both groups, while continuing to support Somali military operations.
