Addis Ababa(Mogadishu24)-The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has reiterated the African Union’s call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of all remaining sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe.

This renewed appeal aligns with the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) commemoration of Anti-Sanctions Day.

In his statement, Chairperson Mahamat emphasized the negative impact of prolonged sanctions on Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development and recovery efforts, urging the international community to consider their removal.

He acknowledged ongoing engagement with the European Union through political dialogue, encouraging all parties to continue these discussions constructively to resolve the issue.

“The African Union fully supports SADC’s efforts and aligns with its position on lifting sanctions against Zimbabwe,” said Mahamat Friday.

He stressed that lifting sanctions would be a significant step towards enabling Zimbabwe to rebuild its economy and enhance development opportunities.

The African Union’s stance underscores its commitment to regional solidarity, calling on global partners to engage in meaningful dialogue to address and resolve the sanctions issue, which has been a longstanding obstacle for Zimbabwe.
