Beijing(Mogadishu24)-China has pledged 200 million yuan (approximately $28 million) in aid to Somalia, marking a notable development in the relationship between the two nations. The announcement came after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where the leaders discussed deepening their bilateral ties and addressing Somalia’s pressing challenges.

The two countries agreed to elevate their diplomatic relationship to a strategic partnership, signaling closer cooperation on economic, political, and social fronts. During the discussions, President Mohamud reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to the One China policy, while expressing gratitude for China’s continued support of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

President Xi outlined China’s intentions to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as economic development, trade facilitation, food security, climate resilience, and human capital development. The $28 million grant is intended to support Somalia’s immediate needs and priorities, though specific details on how the funds will be allocated were not provided.

“China is committed to working with Somalia to enhance cooperation and assist in its development goals,” Xi said during the meeting, stressing the importance of mutual benefit in the relationship.
