The European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Operation Atalanta has announced the liberation of a Chinese fishing vessel that was allegedly hijacked off the northeastern coast of Puntland, Somalia, in what has been classified as an incident of armed robbery at sea. The vessel was reportedly freed earlier today, according to the Chinese Embassy in Somalia.

No injuries to the crew were reported, and the vessel is now en route to safe waters. Operation Atalanta confirmed that they maintained continuous communication with Somali and Chinese authorities, as well as the Chinese Task Force operating in the region, throughout the incident. The European Union’s delegation in Somalia was also kept informed during the event.

In a statement, EU NAVFOR emphasized its commitment to countering piracy and armed robbery in the region. Operation Atalanta reiterated its dedication to deterring, preventing, and repressing piracy activities within its area of operations. The force also underscored the importance of coordinated efforts with partners and regional stakeholders to ensure maritime security.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Somalia’s waters and the critical role of international cooperation in safeguarding maritime routes.

Launched in 2008, Operation Atalanta is the European Union’s counter-piracy operation in the Horn of Africa. It works to protect vulnerable shipping, deter piracy, and enhance the safety of maritime commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways.

The press release classified the incident as “armed robbery at sea,” which refers to piracy-related crimes occurring within territorial waters. The specifics of the hijacking remain under investigation.
