Nairobi(Mogadishu24)-The President of Djibouti President, Ismail Omar Guelleh, on Tuesday reiterated his commitment to strengthen efforts to address climate change in Africa during the three-day Africa Climate Summit. President Guelleh, accompanied by a high-level delegation, attended the summit.

In his address at the summit, President Guelleh advocated for an inclusive approach to the blue economy in Africa to combat illegal activities at sea.

“As the President of IGAD, I support an inclusive approach to the blue economy. Together, we can fight inequality, illegal fishing, and toxic waste dumping for a more sustainable future,” said Ismail Omar Guelleh, Djiboutian President.

He emphasized the importance of establish a comprehensive strategy to guide governments’ climate actions.

“The creation of a National Strategy for the blue economy in 2023 will guide our actions. We are committed to promoting sustainability and resilience in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda,” he added.

The summit which is set to conclude today, has been attended by African leaders, officials from international organizations, and the US President’s special envoy for climate issues, John Kerry.

The Africa Climate Summit aims to develop concrete actions to combat global warming on the African continent, which is particularly hard-hit by the consequences of climate change.

The summit presents a crucial opportunity to strengthen international and regional cooperation on climate change and mobilize resources for climate action in Africa.

During this summit, The leaders will formulate the ‘Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change’ to increase greening initiatives and investments in African countries facing the challenges of climate change.

The African Union and international partners are collaborating on the implementation of this plan to mitigate the effects of climate change. A platform will be created to facilitate the exchange of ideas between African countries and the international community.
