Beijing(Mogadishu24)-Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday in Beijing, marking a significant step in the bilateral relations between the two nations. The meeting took place during President Guelleh’s visit to China for the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The two leaders reaffirmed the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between Djibouti and China, expressing mutual appreciation for the ongoing partnership that benefits both countries. President Guelleh conveyed his gratitude to President Xi for the debt moratorium granted to Djibouti, emphasizing the importance of the dynamic exchanges and solidarity between their nations.

During the discussions, the leaders explored new avenues for strategic collaboration, including projects in housing development and the renovation of Djibouti’s first stadium into an international-standard sports complex. President Xi Jinping used the occasion to announce that China is elevating its relationship with Djibouti to a “comprehensive strategic partnership,” the highest level of cooperation China maintains with any third country.

This elevated partnership comes as the two nations celebrate the 45th anniversary of their bilateral relations, highlighting the deep-rooted and mutually beneficial ties between them. The collaboration spans various sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, logistics, transportation, and energy development, showcasing a model of successful cooperation on the global stage.

The meeting between President Guelleh and President Xi was characterized by mutual respect and a shared commitment to furthering the strong and cooperative relationship between Djibouti and China, based on common values such as sovereignty, non-interference, and shared benefits.
