Djibouti City, Mogadishu 24 – The government of Djibouti has launched a new initiative to build homes designed to withstand the effects of climate change. The project, led by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, aims to create sustainable housing that protects communities from extreme heat and other challenges brought by a changing climate.

The homes are being constructed using red volcanic stones, which provide better insulation against heat compared to traditional materials. At the launch event, Rahima Ahmed Muse, Director-General of the Central Construction Laboratory, explained the benefits of this approach.

“These volcanic stones help keep homes cooler, which is essential in our hot coastal climate,” she said. “It’s a big improvement that will make a real difference for families living in these houses.”

The project, carried out by the Central Construction Laboratory, is part of a larger plan to address climate change’s impact on Djibouti. Muse called on local businesses to support the initiative and help expand the construction of climate-resilient homes.

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure praised the effort, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding Djibouti’s future. “This is about more than just homes—it’s about building a safer, more resilient country,” he said.

Like many coastal nations, Djibouti faces significant risks from climate change, including rising sea levels and extreme weather. The government’s initiative is seen as a proactive step to protect its people and serve as an example for other countries dealing with similar challenges.
