Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Egypt has reiterated its steadfast support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as stated by Dr. Badr Abdel Abdelatty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, during a press conference held with his Turkish counterpart, Mr. Hakan Fidan. Dr. Abdel Ati emphasized Egypt’s firm stance on maintaining the unity of the Somali state and rejected the memorandum of understanding signed between the breakaway of Somaliland and Ethiopia in January 2024.

Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Stability

The Turkish Foreign Minister arrived in Ethiopia on Saturday and engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie. Their talks focused on the diplomatic tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia and preparations for the second phase of talks between the two sides, scheduled to take place in Ankara on September 2.

Following his visit to Ethiopia, Minister Fidan traveled to Cairo to meet with Egyptian officials to address regional crises in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. The discussions aimed at promoting stability and resolving ongoing disputes in the region.

Commitment to Unity

Dr. Abdel Abdelatty’s statements underscore Egypt’s commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Somalia, highlighting the country’s opposition to any agreements that threaten its territorial integrity. The diplomatic efforts by Turkey and Egypt reflect a broader regional initiative to foster dialogue and peace in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
