MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Somalia, Cabdikariin Ahmed, has strongly denied reports claiming that citizens are being forced to register for elections.He clarified that voter registration is not mandatory but a constitutional right, and every citizen has the freedom to register in order to participate in elections.The Chairman made these remarks during a public discussion in Mogadishu on June 4, 2025, where questions were raised regarding the role of women in public elections. Chairman Cabdikariin emphasized the importance of ensuring that every individual has the full freedom to register without interference.“Every individual has the right to register, and no one can be forced to do so,” said the Chairman.He also mentioned that the allegations being raised are currently under investigation, and consultations are ongoing with security agencies to ensure that no one is being coerced into registration.Furthermore, the Chairman urged the public to voluntarily register for the upcoming one-person, one-vote elections.
