Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-The Ethiopian government is intensifying its efforts to prevent illegal migration and human trafficking following a recent tragedy off the coast of Djibouti, where 48 Ethiopian migrants lost their lives.Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye, Ethiopia’s envoy to Djibouti, met with Yodat Foad Kani, President of the Ethiopian Youth Council, to discuss strategies for raising awareness and preventing the dangerous journeys many young Ethiopians undertake.Ambassador Tsegaye emphasized the importance of collaboration with regional partners, including Djibouti youth organizations and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Secretariat, to create a unified approach to prevent illegal migration.“The Ethiopian government is committed to taking strong action against those who facilitate illegal migration, which endangers our youth,” he said.The discussions highlighted the urgency of implementing preventative measures, particularly educational campaigns targeting young people across Ethiopia, to curb the appeal of migration routes often exploited by traffickers.The recent tragedy involved two overcrowded boats carrying 320 migrants, underscoring the risks associated with human trafficking networks in the region.The Ethiopian Youth Council pledged to work closely with government and regional partners to promote awareness and alternative opportunities for young Ethiopians, aiming to reduce illegal migration and prevent future tragedies.
