MOGADISHU, Somalia – The European Union (EU), in collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia, officially launched on May 21, 2025 the Green Energy and Economic Development (GEED) program, a $47.5 million initiative aimed at accelerating Somalia’s green transition and expanding access to renewable energy for households and small businesses.

The GEED program features five innovative projects targeting clean energy access and sustainable economic growth. It addresses key sectoral challenges, including limited financing, regulatory gaps, and institutional capacity constraints, while promoting a circular and inclusive green economy.

The program is funded by the EU with $40.5 million, the German government with $5 million, and an additional $2 million from development partners and civil society organizations.

At the launch event, EU Ambassador to Somalia, Karin Johansson, emphasized the strategic importance of renewable energy: “Renewable energy and green growth have become shared priorities between the EU and the Somali government. Access to green energy is essential for sustainable development, poverty reduction, and building peace and security.”

The event was also attended by Somalia’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdullahi Bidhan Warsame, alongside other government officials, development partners, and implementing organizations.

According to the EU, GEED aligns with the broader Team Europe Initiative on the Green Deal, operational in Somalia since 2021. It also supports the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, which promotes sustainable and inclusive infrastructure investment and international partnerships.
