Mogadishu, Somalia – Former President of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has strongly criticized the recent National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting concluded in Mogadishu, accusing it of being politicized instead of fostering national unity. In a video statement released on Friday 9th may 2025, Sharif argued that the conference, which was expected to bring the federal government and member states closer, has instead deepened divisions among Somalia’s regions. He described the process as marked by poor vision from the country’s leadership.“To suggest the emergence of a dominant political party from such a platform demonstrates a lack of foresight,” said the former president.Sharif also recalled previous attempts by the federal government to undermine regional administrations, citing the example of military intervention aimed at unseating the leadership in Jubbaland. He condemned such actions as unconstitutional and a violation of mutual recognition between the central government and federal member states.“It is unfortunate to claim the establishment of a new administration in a region where the federal government has neither authority nor administrative control. Such moves are mere political theatrics,” he added. His remarks come just days after the NCC, on May 7, 2025, tasked the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation to draft recommendations to address the political impasse in Jubbaland, in accordance with the country’s Provisional Constitution and existing laws.
