Mogadishu, Somalia – Daahir Mahmoud Geelle, former Presidential Advisor on Arab Affairs in Somalia, has confirmed to Dawan media today that he has resigned from his position and been appointed the official spokesperson of Somalia’s opposition.

Geelle stepped down while a three-day opposition conference is underway in Mogadishu, focusing on the country’s political affairs and opposition decisions.

So, who is the new spokesperson of Somalia’s opposition?

Daahir Mahmoud Geelle has been a prominent figure in Somali politics for many years, holding key positions including Director of the Foreign Relations Department at the Ministry of Justice and Religious Affairs, Member of the Federal Parliament, Minister of Information under Sheikh Sharif Ahmed’s administration (2009), Somalia’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia (2012–2017), Minister of Information in President Mohamed Farmaajo’s government (2017), and Presidential Advisor on Arab Affairs (2022–2025).

Geelle also previously served as spokesperson for the Union of Somali Presidential Candidates during the 2022 elections.

Additionally, he was among the presidential candidates in the 2022 elections but withdrew prior to the vote.
